Did somebody say chocolate and healthy in the same sentence?
This delicious smoothie contains raw chocolate, also known as cacao, which is classed as a superfood and the benefits range from reducing cataracts to improving heart function and alleviating stress. The theobromine naturally found in raw cacao is a mild, non-addictive stimulant that some believe can treat depression. It may cause the brain to produce more of a neurotransmitter called anandamide which would account for the euphoric sensation some feel when indulging in chocolate. Raw cacao is certainly very high in antioxidant flavanoids, sulphur and magnesium and there is claim in raw food culture that raw cacao (without added sugar or dairy products) will reduce your risk of cancer as the high levels of antioxidants reduce the amount of free radicals in the body.
The addition of nut milk and butter makes this smoothie protein-rich meaning it has properties to help slow down the nutritious energy from the banana, keeping blood sugar levels stable. This is a great snack before or after exercise or any other time you fancy some chocolatey goodness!
